Special Occasion Relaxations - World Cup and Coronation

21 Nov
2022

At the Institute of Licensing conference last week, Government officials confirmed there were no current plans for a Special Occasion Relaxation to mark the World Cup this winter.

The Licensing Act 2003 gives the Secretary of State (in this case the Home Secretary) the power to lay a Statutory Instrument before Parliament to grant a general relaxation (extension of hours) for premises in England and Wales.

During past tournaments, Governments have introduced such relaxations for the latter stages of Tournaments to reflect the nation’s growing excitement as the home nations progress deeper into the finals.  We wait to see whether this decision will be reviewed if Wales or England progress.

Good luck to both home nations in Qatar.

The same official did confirm however that Special Occasion Relaxation was being considered to mark the Coronation next year.

Law correct at the date of publication.
