Scottish Licensing Figures Released

The Scottish Government’s Justice Analytical Services have just released figures relating to personal and premises licences activity during the period 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012.

This is the second set of such figures released since the adoption of the new Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.  The previous figures related to the period 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2011; this therefore allow some comparisons to be drawn. 

Here are some key comparisons:

  • The number of overall licensed premises increased during this period from 16,296 to 16,391 (an increase of 0.58%)
  • The number of overall applications however decreased over the same period from 479 to 445 (a decrease of approximately -7%)
  • The largest reduction of applications were for off sale premises which reduced by approximately -10% from 230 in 2010/2011 to 206 in 2011/2012
  • The number of application reused in the same period doubled from 10 in 2010/2011 to 21 in 2011/2012

The largest number of premises licence remain in City of Edinburgh, Glasgow City and Highland Board areas, which together account for almost 30 per cent of the total of premises licences.

The number of premises licences increased in Glasgow City and Highland Board areas during this period however the number of premises in City of Edinburgh shrunk by 16 (-0.8%).

The number of personal licences in force on 31st March 2012 was 46,701. The number of applications for personal licences which were granted was 5,282, while only 17 were refused.
