Scotland: MUP to rise to 65p per unit on 30th September 2024

2024

We have previously reported that the minimum unit pricing in Scotland in set to rise and the potential spread of MUP across the rest of the UK.

On the 30th  of September 2024, the rate in Scotland will rise from 50 p per unit to 65 p (a 30% increase).

Although the Scottish Government have argued that the rise is needed, in part, to address the effect of price rises through inflation, the changes will result in a large increase in cost and ironically will add value to the ‘basket’ of goods used to calculate consumer price inflation by the Office of National Statistics.  Therefore, the rise may potentially cause a rise in the underlying inflation rate, creating a vicious circle.

Product increases for the minimum price would be in the region of:

Whiskey: £14.00 to £18.20

Can of larger: £1.00 to £1.30

Red wine: £4.69 to £6.09
