Protection of Children from Harm

One of the 4 Licensing Objectives is the Protection of Children from Harm and it is incumbent on all who work in the hospitality and retail arenas to play their part in stopping child abuse, although not directly applicable to hospitality and retail teams, it is interesting to note the recent enhancement of this responsibility elsewhere.

The Home Secretary today announced plans so that anyone in regulated activity relating to children in England, including teachers or healthcare professionals, must report if they know a child is being sexually abused.

The law will require that anyone who actively protects child sexual abusers – by intentionally blocking others from reporting or covering up the crime – could go to prison for 7 years.

Plus, anyone who fails to report child sexual abuse they are aware of and falls short of their legal duties, could face being barred from working with young people.

Along with a block on the ability of to stop registered sex offenders from changing their name if they still pose a risk to their communities.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said:

"There is no excuse for turning a blind eye to a child’s pain."

His comments are of course right and apply to each and every one of us.

Law correct at the date of publication.
