Newcastle's Late Night Levy to be Axed

It is being reported that at a meeting of Newcastle City Council Licensing Committee this week it was agreed that the current Late night Levy should be scrapped

A Consultation on the proposal will now take place, with a final decision expected in October.

The levy is an annual fee of between £299 and £4,400, currently charged to 281 businesses in the city with a licence to sell alcohol between midnight and 6am. It is said The levy has raised more than £3m since its introduction in 2013

Colin Ferguson city council leader is reported as saying he wanted the levy to be axed, as it placed an "additional and disproportionate pressure" on late night venues
