Minimun Unit Pricing (MUP) - Wales - Update

Minium Unit Pricing for Wales is to change on the 1st October 2026.

Commonly referred to as 'MUP' this is the price per unit which is then times by the number of units in a particular measure. It is illegally to sell alcoholic products for less than this.

Each geographical area addresses the base price per unit of alcohol sold differently . but Wales will on the 1st October join Scotland with an MUP of £0.65 per unit, a £0.15 rise on the current rate.

Operators and retailers will need to check their price lists and make any requisite amendments before the 1st October, this can be a significant exercise as marketing material, printed menus and website content all will need to be checked and potentially updated.

MUP(£0.65) X ABV Strength(%) X Volume in Litres(0.25)=Minimum Price

For a standard 13% ABV wine, the calculation works out as:

0.65 × 13 × 0.25 = £2.1125 (rounded up to £2.12)
