King Charles' Coronation

For the first time in many people’s lives, we will see a King’s Coronation, with the Coronation of His Royal Highness King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort taking place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey, London. It is expected that thousands of people will visit England’s capital, whilst millions are estimated to tune in, across the UK and around the globe.

To commemorate this very historic occasion, various festivities and celebrations have been planned throughout the bank holiday weekend, including the Coronation Concert which will be held at Windsor Castle on the 7 May 2023.

In respect of licensing laws, last month the government launched a public consultation into extending licensing hours from 11pm to 1am from Friday 5 May until Sunday 7 May in England and Wales. If granted, this will mean that licensed premises such as pubs, bars and clubs will be able to sell alcohol for an extra two hours (if their current licence does currently permit alcohol sales beyond 23:00).

In Scotland, it is anticipated that the relevant Licensing Boards will adopt a similar approach, but that each Board will make its own determination, and Orkney Islands Area Licensing Board recently announced a general extension for on-sales premises over the Coronation weekend to be:

Saturday 6th of May 2023 until 01:30 on the morning of Sunday 7 May 2023.

Sunday 7th of May 2023 until 00:30 on the morning of Monday, 8 May 2023.

Monday 8th of May 2023 until 24:00.
