Leigh Schelvis

Senior Solicitor

Originating from Australia, I gained a Criminology degree from the University of Leicester and completed my legal training and training contract in Leeds. I qualified as a Solicitor in 2014 and after gaining both Licensing and Litigation experience at boutique and national firms, I joined John Gaunt and Partners in 2021 as a Senior Licencing Solicitor.

I have experience in handling all types of Licensing applications, including Alcohol Licensing, Gaming and Adult Entertainment matters, across Wales, England and Scotland, including appearing on behalf of clients before Committees and Courts. I have represented a variety of operators ranging from PLCs, a Premiership Football Club, national supermarket chain, national gambling operators, and both national and independent bar and pub operators. I have a special interest in advising on the Licensing issues regarding sporting events.

Prior to qualifying as a Solicitor, I financially supported myself through University and Law School, by working in a variety of restaurants and bars being employed by some of the UK’s most prevalent operators and award-winning cocktail bars. During this time, I held every position from glass collector up to management positions, gaining vital practical operation experience of the hospitality industry which I draw on, when providing our clients with practical legal advice.

I also have experience of advising operators on applying for or renewing pavement licences and advising clients on complying with the Smoke Free regulations.

In my spare time I am a keen triathlete and also an avid Sheffield Steelers fan.
