Cumulative Impact Policy Findings - Sheffield
2018
Following a public consultation on the possible adoption of a Cumulative Impact Policy in central Sheffield, particularly covering the areas of West Street and Devonshire Green, the consultation findings have been released. Interestingly, the consultation was coordinated by the Office of The Director of Public Health within Sheffield rather than South Yorkshire Police.
The consultation enquired as to whether a Cumulative Impact Policy is suitable for this area and if so, what should be covered by the Policy. The consultation received 800 responses. The questions focused on people’s experience of the area and their observations rather than a review of the crime and disorder statistics for the area. Of interest, the adverse street behaviour most frequently observed in the area were begging (84%) street drinking (81%) and rough sleeping (74%). When asked what respondents would like to see less of in the area, the most popular responses were off-licences and licensed casinos, which was an unusual response as there is no licensed casino in the area.
Overall, in relation to the leisure and hospitality offer within the area there was limited criticism but a very clear plea by members of the public for support for those persons who find themselves homeless.
