Wrexham Licence Holders Warned Over Scam Text Messages

Wrexham Council have warned licence holders to be alive to “Smishing” (short for SMS Phishing) scams asking them for money to update their licences.

Smishing is the fraudulent practice of sending text messages claiming to be from reputable companies, in this case, a local authority, to gain personal information or bank details, which will be used to misappropriate funds.

The council explained that licence holders have been receiving calls or text messages from a mobile number asking them to pay a fee to update their licence.

Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Planning and Public Protection said:

“This is worrying for local traders in Wrexham and our advice is always to check with the licensing department before making any payment. They will never make unsolicited calls or texts asking for payment.”
