Relaxation of licensing hours for Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations - update

We are seeing reports that the proposed extension to celebrate the Queen’s birthday has in fact been granted.  As of this afternoon, this is NOT the case.  Although imminently expected, this anticipated extension has yet to receive ministerial sign off.

To remind the proposal is that any approved Order would only apply to premises already licensed to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises until at least 23.00 and that any automatic extensions would be until 01.00 on Saturday 11 June and 01.00 on Sunday 12 June.  Regulated entertainment and late night refreshment would only be automatically extended where the premises is also licensed to sell alcohol.

Saturday 11 June is of course also the date of the opening matches for both England and Wales at Euro 2016 in France – so there may possibly be cause for double or indeed triple celebrations! The competition itself kicks off (pun intended) on Friday 10 June, at 21.00 with France v Romania.

We will update further as and when.

Law correct at the date of publication.
