Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that the government are committed to bringing in a registration scheme for short-term holiday lets.

The commitment arose during Prime Minister’s Questions on 7 December when the Prime Minister responded to a question from Nickie Aiken, MP for the Cities of London and Westminster.

Asked whether the Government was considering introducing a registration scheme the Prime Minister revealed that the Levelling Up Secretary had committed to creating a new tourist accommodation registration scheme. The Prime Minister added that this would “increase appropriate regulation of the sector” and that the Government would also “consult on whether planning permission should be required for new short-term holiday lets.”

There is currently no information on what the registration scheme would look like or what the requirements will be, but we will keep an eye on developments and update as matters progress.
