Gaming: Proposals for Changes to Maximum Stake and Prize Limits for Category B, C and D Gaming Machines

2013

Prior to the Gambling Act 2005, a “triennial review” of the maximum stake and prize limits across different types of gaming machines became established. The review mainly considered whether increases were required to keep stake and prize levels in line with inflation. It was based around a three year planning cycle, with the last one held in 2001, but there have been significant changes in the market since then in terms of regulatory approach and technological development.

In October 2011 the Government announced the reintroduction of a triennial review system to consider the level of monetary limits on stakes and prizes applied to gaming machines in Great Britain through the Gambling Act 2005.  The aim being to put in place a more coherent and systematic approach to the regulation of stakes and prizes.

The first review under the new system has now been completed and the Government is now consulting on a package of measures changing the maximum stake and prize limits for a range of gaming machines situated in arcades, bingo premises, casinos and pubs and clubs in Britain. The consultation also seeks information on the impact of B2 gaming machines (Fixed Odds Betting Terminals).

Comments are invited on the proposals as set out in the consultation document. An impact assessment has also been published analyzing the associated costs and benefits.
