6th July Extension - Mexico Vs England - World Cup 2026

2026

On Thursday afternoon, 2nd July, the Government announced that they would utilise their recently amended powers under s.172 of the Licensing Act 2003 to allow pubs in England and Wales to open for the upcoming round of 16 game between Mexico and England which is scheduled to kick off at 1 am on Monday morning (6th July).

The Government will now lay a draft Order before Parliament to allow the trading and approve the same immediately. This is expected to happen today, Friday 3rd July.

The wording of the draft Order has not yet been seen however there are currently no indications whether the Order will require any special measures to be implemented or be drafted in such a way as to allow Pub to remain open if, due to weather, the game is delayed and does not finish at the expected time. Kick off during Mexico’s last game hosted at the Stadium in question was delayed by an hour due to adverse weather conditions.

If you have already secured a TEN, as many thousands of premises have, you may wish to consider whether you wish to utilise these instead of the proposed extension especially if, as part of your TEN, you have suspended certain conditions of your existing Licence (such as children access).

We shall post a copy of the final Order here as soon as it is published and approved.

Finally, premises aiming to take advantage of the Order may wish to consider the BBPA’s guidance for Pubs on showing World Cup games, which we previously reported here.

A copy of the BBPA’s guidance can be found here.

Law correct at the date of publication.
