Martyn's Law | Election 2024

Amongst several important pieces of legislation which were lost when the general election was called was ‘ Martyn’s Law’ (aka ‘Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill’). If enacted the bill would have imposed requirements in relation to certain premises and events to increase their preparedness for, and protection from, a terrorist attack by requiring them to take proportionate steps, depending on the size and nature of the activities that take place at the premises.

The Bill arose from the tragic terrorist attack which took place at the Manchester Arena in 2017 and which took the life of Martyn Hett and 21 other innocent people. The work of the Manchester Arena Inquiry and Martyn’s tireless mother, Figen Murray, led to the introduction of the Bill in May 2023.

This important piece of Legislation had cross party support and in their recently manifestos both the Conservative and Labour parties have now promised to bring in ‘Martyn’s Law’ if elected.
